THE BEE GLOBE (BIENENKUGEL®) ADVENTURE
A GUIDEBOOK FOR “SPHERICAL” BEEKEEPING
“The vast majority of today’s hive types have been developed for the requirements of beekeeping and not for the requirements of the bees themselves. The hives are practical, angular, stackable, easy to transport, made out of polystyrene and light. A bee globe is the exact opposite. It is large and heavy, very difficult to transport, made out of wood and only has one brood chamber. You would think that all of these aspects would make it almost impossible to use for beekeeping. On the contrary, it actually works superbly.” This is the conclusion that the experienced (Langstroth) beekeeper, Undine Westphal, comes to in her fourth book about beekeeping. She has already made a name for herself through her lectures in Germany and abroad, as well as through her textbooks. Undine became curious and together with pupils from her school apiary tried out this new way of beekeeping as part of a research project. The bee globe – first developed by Andreas Heidinger just a few years ago – is still not very well known among beekeepers but has recently enjoyed ever increasing popularity. The ability to recreate the bees’ natural habitat through the bee globe, to develop effective ways to control Varroa and to simultaneously be compatible with Langstroth beekeeping are just three of the many reasons that made Undine Westphal interested in Andreas Heidinger’s concept of the “Bienenkugel®”. With this useful and very precise guide to working with this unusual hive, Undine is able to pass on her positive experiences and will inspire you to discover beekeeping in a new way. Above all, we can again learn to “listen” to the bees more closely and to treat them in a more respectful way.
